Smallest Country in the World: The VATICAN

The domes of San Carlo al Corso Church and St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City, the world’s smallest country.

As of 1929, The Vatican became a separate legal country within Rome, Italy.

0.2 square miles – The  Vatican has a population of 770, none of whom are permanent residents. The tiny country which surrounds St. Peter’s Basilica is the spiritual center for the world’s Roman Catholics (over 1 billion strong). Also known as the Holy See, Vatican City is surrounded by Rome, Italy.

Some argue that The Sovereign Military Order Of Malta (SMOM) is actually the world’s smallest country, but you can find out why the SMOM is nothing more than an international organization.
